Drive toward the Cape Coral Bridge and you can't miss it: a colossal American flag flying from a 250-foot pole - now the tallest free-standing American flagpole in the entire state of Florida. Here's the real story, where to find it, and how to work it into your Southwest Florida trip.
Florida's Tallest Flagpole, By the Numbers
250 feet tall
The pole stands a state-record 250 feet - taller than a 20-story building. It's officially the tallest free-standing American flagpole in Florida, chosen to symbolize the country's 250th anniversary in 2026.
A genuinely giant flag
The Old Glory flying from it is enormous - local reporting put the flag at roughly 90 by 150 feet, about the footprint of a single-family lot. On a breezy Gulf afternoon you can see it ripple from across the river.
Built for the moment
Construction started June 1, 2026 and the pole topped out just days before Independence Day - a fast, community-driven build right at the water's edge.
Where to Find It
Bernice Braden Park
Address: 2051 Cape Coral Parkway East, Cape Coral, FL - at the foot of the Cape Coral Bridge, beside the river. The park sits next to the city's Veterans Memorial area, making it a fitting home for the flag.
Free and open to the public
No admission, no reservation. There's parking at the park, and the flag is visible from the bridge, nearby roads, and the water.
The Story Behind the Flag
A community "Raise the Flag" campaign
The project was funded entirely through private donations - the city's "Raise the Flag" campaign set a $500,000 goal, with gifts ranging from $1 to $150,000 from residents, businesses, and community partners.
Raised on July 4, 2026
The flag flew for the first time during a free public ceremony at 2 p.m. on Independence Day 2026, honoring America's 250th birthday as "a lasting symbol of freedom, democracy, and unity at the foot of the Cape Coral Bridge," in the words of City Manager Michael Ilczyszyn.
Best Ways to See It
From the park
Stand at the base for the full sense of scale - photos don't do 250 feet justice. Early morning and golden hour light are best.
From the Cape Coral Bridge
The elevated span gives a head-on view of the flag against the water and sky - a favorite for drivers heading into or out of the Cape.
From the water
By far the most dramatic angle. If you're out boating on the Caloosahatchee or heading toward the Gulf, the flag is a landmark you can navigate by. Guests in our Gulf-access homes can take it in right from the boat.
Make It Part of Your Cape Coral Trip
Pair it with the water
The flag sits at the gateway between Cape Coral's canals and the Gulf. Combine a visit with a sunset cruise, a morning on the water, or lunch at the nearby Cape Coral Yacht Club.
Stay close to the action
Our Gulf-access homes put you minutes from the bridge and the open water - ideal if you want to see the flag from your own boat.
